The Battle Over Rewards Points

American’s AAdvantage last year introduced “Loyalty Point Rewards,” which also put a greater emphasis on credit card spending. That could mean an unbundling of the programs, not unlike what has happened with streaming, where rewards members would pay for the benefits they want and forgo ones they don’t. The airlines are already unbundling their services, particularly ultra-low-cost carriers such as Spirit Airlines, Frontier Airlines and Breeze Airways. New twists on rewardsIn a twist on traditional loyalty programs, some companies are asking members to pay a relatively nominal fee in order to gain access to rewards. While they won’t earn miles or elite status, if they’re an elite member of the standard rewards program, they won’t pay extra for carry-on or checked bags, depending on the tier.

"No question we probably went too far," Bastian said at the Rotary Club of Atlanta on Monday. The airline and rivals including American and United have been racing to build bigger airport lounges to cater to swelling numbers of big spenders. Bastian said the airline will announce the updated program changes in the coming weeks. A Delta spokesman declined to comment further on the changes.

But now JetBlue wants to be a major player, too. It formed the Northeast Alliance with American Airlines in 2021 and, a year later, announced its planned acquisition of ultra low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines. Last month, a federal judge ordered JetBlue and American to disentangle the Northeast Alliance. While most goods and services improve over decades, air travel has defied progress — with the very important exception of safety. Today, the four major carriers control most of these precious slots in major airports and aren’t keen to surrender them.

An ongoing pilot shortage has plagued US airlines since travel came roaring back post-pandemic. While some organizations — like the Regional Airline Association advocacy group — have praised the legalization, the Air Line Pilots Association has opposed it, Reuters reported. Increasing pilot payRegional flying has been particularly impacted by the pilot shortage, forcing airlines to slash dozens of flights to small markets and even ground regional jets. Other regional carriers like Mesa Airlines, Republic Airways, and Delta's wholly-owned airline Endeavor Air have also gotten pay increases. Lowering training requirementsRegional carrier Republic recently asked the FAA to reduce the flight hour requirement for pilots graduating from its LIFT pilot training academy.
Moreover, every city it flies to connects to at least two others, and it flies nonstop across the US, connecting places like Las Vegas to New England and Disney World and Disneyland. This is an advantage it has over Avelo. Breeze's A220 extra legroom economy seats. These routes are helping Breeze break into markets and serve cities not previously connected nonstop — gaining popularity among travelers who many times had layovers when flying across the US. Tayfun Coskun | Anadolu Agency | Getty ImagesSouthwest CEO Bob Jordan's message, after a holiday meltdown derailed the travel plans of millions, is clear: "I can't say it enough. The low-cost airline is working with General Electric to improve the capabilities of software that helps Southwest work out crew reassignments. Southwest said it offered premium pay to flight attendants and $45 million in "gratitude pay" to pilots because of the meltdown. He said that a recent fare sale was successful and that many customers are redeeming the frequently flyer points for Southwest flights. "This payment constitutes full and final settlement of your claim with Southwest Airlines."
No matter how many times you yell “representative” into the phone, you won’t reach an employee at Frontier Airlines . The budget carrier dropped its phone service option last month, leaving customers to use chat functions or social media to resolve issues. The airline joins a growing group of companies—from Breeze Airways to Resy to Facebook —that eliminate or make phone numbers extra hard for customers to find. Instead, they rely on automated or text-based customer service. Others still have operators, but are pushing more customers to use online services rather than the phone.
New York CNN —Customers who need flight information or want to make changes to travel plans can no longer call Frontier Airlines and speak to an agent, the company confirmed to CNN Saturday. Customers seeking help or information from the carrier must deal with an online chatbot, social media channels or WhatsApp. Customers who call the customer service phone number now are greeted with an automated message that says, “At Frontier, we offer the lowest fares in the industry by operating our airline as efficiently as possible. We also have a chat service available 24/7.”Its low-cost flight competitors, Spirit Airlines and Allegiant Airlines, still use call centers staffed by live agents. It’s no wonder Frontier wants to get rid of customer service over the phone.
The low-cost carrier will fly between Raleigh-Durham and New Orleans, Hartford, and Providence. The new non-stop flights join the Breeze route map in February. The Research Triangle made up of Raleigh, Chapel Hill, and Durham is home to the University of North Carolina, North Carolina State University, and Duke University. Breeze also announced non-stop flights on select days from Pittsburgh to Hartford and NOLA with returning routes starting in early February. Breeze also recently announced it is launching 2 new routes from Southern California's John Wayne Airport in Orange County.
Breeze is launching its 100th route, a new transcontinental flight from California to Florida. Breeze plans to expand service at the slot-constrained John Wayne Airport in Orange County, California. Breeze is adding John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana, California to its map with new nonstop routes from Southern California to Orlando International Airport and Provo Municipal Airport in Utah near Salt Lake City starting on February 16. The upstart's new routes fits into the Breeze model of connecting leisure-heavy locations without nonstop service. Most major airlines serve John Wayne and Orlando, but flights between them require one or more stops.
He says the best way to avoid lost baggage is to arrive early and not pack bulky items like coats. Seriously, an airline doesn't want to lose your baggage, and even though you may be more inconvenienced than the airline, it's too costly for us to deal with lost baggage. Here's my best advice for handling a lost bag and making sure you never have to worry about lost baggage again when flying. Then the airline doesn't scan it in time for TSA or the baggage handler to take the luggage to the airplane, and it gets lost. If it's not in baggage claim, the ticket counter is the second best area to go.
